The reason is that most are not complete and sometimes cannot be duplicated on other machines EXACTLY so I get arguments. I use my machines and publish the results that depend on number of CPUs, what kind of CPUx, amount of RAM, what kind of HD and, usually, the exact command line used for each machine and setup to minimize the time spent. Each run can be different so I usually run each one about 10 times to get an average.James Owenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09329916624230570826noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6947769630065163891.post-91360085441842782752014-11-14T02:45:56.736-06:002014-11-14T02:45:56.736-06:00@Gary: The whole purpose of using different confl...@Gary: The whole purpose of using different conflict resolution strategies is that one works best with one set of problems and another works best with another set of problems, or rules. When MEA works one way, Depth or Breadth might work another and, naturally, each one would fire (normally) a different number of rules depending on the order in which they were evaluated. Personally, I really do not like priorities, or salience, since that seems to be a "forcing function" on the rules.

The main purpose of Declarative Programming is that the rules should have HAVE to have a certain order nor salience. However, initialization rule(s) should be high and output rules should be low or minus. That said, a rulebase should not have more than three levels of salience. So saith all of the "older" theories of programming a rulebase. However, this year we are considering only three of the original benchmarks: Waltz50, WaltzDB-16 and WaltzDB-200. In addition we are evaluating Cliques and Vertex Cover, both from the NP-Complete problems found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_NP-complete_problems .

What is difficult is to get any of the benchmarks done for BRMS other than the OPS-type, such as Drools, OPSJ, JRules/ODM, Sparkling Logic, Jess, CLIPS, Blaze Advisor, etc. Visual Rules, VisiRules and Open Rules and others of this type seem to have problems implementing these benchmarks properly. Also, at this point, none of the vendors care enough to help with implementing any of the benchmarks with their particular machine.

I am encouraging everyone to be at Decision Camp 2014 this year so that we can have a meaningful discussion on javascript:void(0)benchmarks.

JamesJames Owenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09329916624230570826noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6947769630065163891.post-47519703814561213802014-02-15T15:06:50.992-06:002014-02-15T15:06:50.992-06:00James,

Most people today are less interested in rule engines performance but rather in an ability to represent and manage complex rules with exceptions and conflicts. For example, the basic Miss Manner could be modified to consider the situations when data sets do not provide enough people to satisfy gender and/or hobby requirements. Would a rule engine fail or would it offer a solution that minimizes rules violations? I did a quite detailed analysis of this problem in my RulesFest-2009 presentation. BTW, the RulesFest that time was nicely chaired by James Owen.
